Hey!

We're the Parrot Pirates of Charlotte Harbor and Gasparilla Island

CHPHC Supports Our Environment

The Charlotte Harbor Parrot Head Club has set about to help the environment in Charlotte Harbor, one of the most scenic areas in Florida. The Club, in cooperation with the Charlotte Harbor Environment Center to help label storm drains in some of the older neighborhoods. These labels are there to remind the residents that whatever goes in those drains, eventually ends up in the Charlotte Harbor estuary. Excessive fertilizer, paint and gasoline are some of the worst hazardous materials that residents unwittingly dump in the storm drains.

Peace River Clean Up 2010

The Charlotte Harbor Parrot Head Club took the lead in organizing the Sixteenth Annual Peace River Clean-Up on June 5 & 6 2010. They were supported by the Boy Scouts, Navigator Boat Club, Mosaic Co., and the Nav-A-Gator Grill.

Quoting from a story by NBC-2 reporter Paul Gessler who wrote:

  • "This year, The Charlotte Harbor Parrot Head Club and the boy scouts pulled hundreds of pounds from the Peace River,
    which flows into Charlotte Harbor.

'People are just rude, impolite, they have no sense of taking care of the environment,' Bob Brandt said. '(I've found)
Portable Johns, big pieces of rubber and plastic laying around, 55-gallon drums... And pieces of sheds.'

Volunteers took to canoes, kayaks and boats to clean the river. The boy scouts who volunteered Saturday cleaned up 500
pounds of trash, including two metal chairs, two plastic chairs and two tires.

'You don't want (tourists) taking pictures of wildlife with garbage bags in the background,' Parrot Head member Karen
Powers said. '(This effort) helps clean up some of the stuff that would never bio-degrade.'"

You can read the rest of the story at the NBC-2 web site.

Eight canoes and/or kayaks were donated to the Parrot Head Club and the Boy Scouts by the Nav-A-Gator Grill for use during the clean-up.

Mosaic donated 200 T-shirts for the volunteers of the clean up.

Womack Sanitation donated a large dumpster for the project.

On Saturday June 5th, Mystic River provided the music from 2-5 p.m. at the Nav-A-Gator after the river clean-up.

On Sunday June 6th Gary and Kerri entertained the volunteers at the Nav-A-Gator from 2-5 p.m. after the river clean-up.
