August Phlocking – Jimi Pappas, The Yah Yah Girls & Back Pack Kidz
The Yah Yah Girls, a Backpack, and a Friday
Join us for our August Phlocking as we come together for great music, good friends, and an important local cause: The Yah Yah Girls and Back Pack Kidz.
Around 2010, Jolene Mowry and a group of friends known as the Yah Yah Girls learned that local children were returning to school hungry after the weekend. For children who counted on school breakfasts and lunches, Saturday and Sunday could mean two long days with very little to eat.
Their response was practical and personal. If a backpack filled with food on Friday could help carry a child through the weekend, then that was what they would pack. Word spread, more neighbors stepped in, and a grassroots idea became a dependable weekly effort.
Today, Back Pack Kidz carries that same caring spirit forward. Working quietly through schools and trusted staff, the organization helps food reach children with respect and privacy—never spotlight or shame.
Why Weekends Matter
School meal programs do wonderful work Monday through Friday. The gap opens when the final bell rings on Friday afternoon. Back Pack Kidz helps bridge that gap so children can return to school on Monday nourished, focused, and ready to learn.
Snack Donations Needed
This month, Back Pack Kidz is requesting individually packaged snacks that can be placed into weekend food bags.
Please bring any of the following:
Cheez-It crackers
Pringles
Pop-Tarts
Chips
Cookies
Pretzels
Slim Jims or beef jerky
Every donated snack helps provide a little extra nourishment and comfort for a local child over the weekend.

Entertainment This Month: Jimi Pappas

Jimi Pappas returns to Punta Gorda to entertain us at our August Phlocking!
Jimi is a four-time Trop Rock Music Awards winner, earning honors for Horizon, Song of the Year, and twice for Musician of the Year. His original music blends Americana, folk, and rock with his love of tropical places. His covers and original songs are influenced by the singer-songwriter movement of the early 1970s, and he also gives classic rock favorites his own acoustic treatment.
Many people do not know that Jimi is also an accomplished drummer. Years before keeping the beat for Jim Morris’ Big Bamboo Band, he toured the world backing Chubby Checker!
Today, in addition to his busy solo career, Jimi leads the Beatles tribute show “BeatleBeat,” performs in Tom Becker’s John Denver Tribute, and collaborates with other musicians on a variety of projects.
Come ready to enjoy an evening of music, friendship, and Parrot Head fun while helping make weekends a little brighter for children in our community.
