June Phlocking Charity: Kids Needs of Englewood

Our June phlocking is Kids Needs of Englewood. They were started in 2009 by 3 local Englewood people, Tom Dignam, Macia Louden and Ann Dever.  We have since grown to serve 500+ children annually by providing essentials such as shoes, socks, underwear and toiletries, and also providing not only gently used, but in many cases new clothing to students in our service area.  We do not ask for proof of need, but ask each family to fill out a registration sheet with their home address and childrens names and schools.  They are then permitted to "shop" once a month for any of these items they need for their children.  All items are free to our families.  We do place some restrictions on the amount of items each family may take every month.  This ensures we are able to serve everyone and not just the ones that come first.

In addition to our "flagship" boutique for families, Kids Needs also provides financial help to the neediest of our families at:

Christmas by providing $75 Walmart gift cards for every eligible child in our school system, amounting to $30-$40,000 each year.  These families are vetted by school social workers and guidance counselors.  In addition to this, we also offer 100 summer camp scholarships to our families to help keep these children fed and out of harm's way.  Many of these kids would not have a meal or any supervision throughout the day during summer break if not for this assistance.

For our older high school students we provide graduation packets consisting of cap and gown, senior portrait, and grad bash.  We have also taken students to Dillards the past two years for prom wear.  We have budgeted enough to provide new formal wear for approximately 15 students each year. This is an interactive event where board members go and help the students.  Dillards graciously opens early for us to come and all our kids get VIP treatment.  It's truly magical.

JUNE PHLOCKING ENTERTAINMENT

donnie howard

Growing up along the coast of Georgia, singer/songwriter Donnie Howard was heavily influenced by Southern Rock icons like The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and also by the coastal sounds of Jimmy Buffett. One of his earliest gigs was playing at a marina bar in Savannah, where he performed an extensive list of Jimmy’s songs. In recent years, he has been influenced by the country genre, and has immersed himself in the songwriting of artists like Jason Isbell and Chris Stapleton.

Eventually, Donnie began writing and performing his own songs, blending his influences to create his own “Coastal Country” sound. In 2021, he traveled to Nashville to record several of his original songs, which have been released on all streaming outlets.

Donnie performed acoustic shows in the Raleigh, NC area for more than 15 years. During that time, he was extremely involved with his local Parrot Head club, performing at many of their events and serving on their board of directors. He and his family relocated to SE Florida last year, and he now calls Jensen Beach home.

His latest song, “Down in Georgia,” will be released later this year.
